| Even before India played their first cricket Test match in 1932, two Indian cricketers had already held the bat on the cricket field. Ranjitsinhji was the first Indian cricketer to play cricket. Ranjit was a king who played for England in the early 1900s. His nephew Duleep Sinhji was the second Indian cricketer to play cricket. However, he too played for the England side in domestic cricket matches.
The game of cricket was introduced in India by the British during their rule in India. Team India played its first cricket Test match on June 25, 1932 at Lord’s against England under the captaincy of C K Nayudu. But being new to the world of cricket, Team India lost the match by 158 runs. India played their official cricket Test series against Sir Donald Bradman’s Australian team. India won their first Test at home in 1952 against England in Madras under Lala Amarnath. Team India’s first overseas cricket Test win came in 1971 in the West Indies and then against England in the same year.
Sourav Ganguly, who took over as India captain in 2000, has been the most successful captain for India having won 21 of his 49 Test matches in charge and 73 of his 141 ODIs. India played their first One day Indternational (ODI) cricket in 1974, under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. Their first ODI win came in the 1975 World Cup. The biggest achievement in cricket till date is the World Cup triumph in 1983. Kapil Dev led Team India to the coveted cup and the title of world cricket champions. Indian cricket’s fortunes changed from that day and it caught the attention of the world.
